Chazy Lake in 1910

1913 map of Chazy LakeThe baseline year for the research for this family history project is 1900 because we believe the population of Chazy Lake was much smaller at that time.  However there is a U.S. Geological Survey Map that was made of the lake in 1913 and published in 1915 on which the locations of houses were marked, without names.  This map shows 65 houses (unless I counted wrong!); the census gives us 67 households.

I’ve made a list of the heads of Chazy Lake households from the 1910 census to compare with the map.

Theorectically it should be possible to match each house with a name from the 1910 census. Not all the houses were given visitation numbers for reasons that I don’t understand.   The road names are also odd for those of us living today, but Mountain Road is certainly the present State Route 374 and Chazy Lake Road is now called Wilfred King Road, or at least part of what is referred to in the Census is called Wilfred King road.  It looks as if the Census referred to that portion of 374 from the top of Dannemora Mountain to the Dam as Chazy Lake Road and also to what we know as the Plank Rd  seems to have been called Chazy Lake road.  More information my turn up to help clarify which road is which but since there are just 3 roads the problem is not critical.

In any case I’ve chosen to leave the name “Chazy Lake Road” in place where I thought they were ennumerating Wilfred King Road and leave name column blank where it might have been either the Plank Road or the portion of 374 from Dannemora to the Dam.

Also I’ve indicated the sons of Seraphim King with a blue highlight, and the son-in-law of Seraphim King with a yellow highlight.

There is a lot more to do on this and I hope to update this page to make the information more complete.  For now I’ve restricted the information to Heads of Households only because it is a better way to match the households with the houses, but I hope to add another PDF giving the names of all the people and an accurate population for the valley.

The surveyor who made this map boarded with Frank and Phoebe Fournier while he was doing his work on the valley.  As a gift he gave them a hand drawn map of Chazy Lake which they hung over the fireplace in their livingroom.  Unfortunately the house burned to the ground and the map, along with other family treasures was lost.
